The former premises of Zola's cafe on Churchfield Road
July 23, 2025
Another upmarket bakery is planning to attempt to establish itself on Churchfield Road.
Layla Bakery, which currently operates from Portobello Road, will be taking over the vacant unit at number 53 this September. It is the former home of Zola’s café and is adjacent to the premises formerly occupied by Art of Chimney Cake which closed earlier this year.
The existing venue is well regarded for its artisanal pastries and wild‑grain sourdough bread. Popular specialities include the pistachio Suisse and yuzu bow ties.
The Ladbroke Grove branch was opened in 2021 by Tessa Faulkner and tries to use and seasonal ingredients as well as serving coffee made with Assembly Roast beans. Colton Dinner, who is the head baker at Ladbroke Grove, will be executive baker at both sites.
The scheduled opening date is Thursday 4 September and the new venue plans to focus on takeaway with just a few chairs in the interior and benches outside in fine weather.
Tessa Faulkner said, “Friends who’ve moved to the area often say Acton is missing a neighbourhood spot like Layla. We’re excited to bring the same quality and care that’s made us a favourite in Ladbroke Grove to the Acton community.”
