Brentford's oldest building opened to the public for first time in 25 years
Janet McNamara relishing her first visit to the Church for a long time.
The tower of St. Lawrence's Church dates to the 15th century and it is by far Brentford's oldest surviving building. The rest of the Church was built from brick in the 18th century. The Church ceased to be used for worship over 60 years ago and was then deconsecrated and for the last 25 years it has been closed to the public.
For some time, Brentford Voice has been pressing for permission for the community to view the interior of St. Lawrence's Church. However, there are some remaining health and safety concerns.
Supervised access was granted in February 2022 to a small group from Brentford Voice and Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society.
This video below was recorded during the visit to the Church.
Jim Storrar of Brentford Voice and Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society said, “Our thanks go to Museum of London Archaeology for commissioning the video, and to Ballymore for providing access to the building.
“Although full restoration will cost a great deal of money, it is remarkable that the Church is still capable of being used for other purposes. Brentford Voice are delighted that there is now a commitment to uses which will be open to the entire community. We will continue to press for appropriate provision.
“We imagine that some years will pass before we can once again use this wonderful building on a daily basis. We look forward to that time!”
