Book seven of Brentford Trilogy celebrated by convention
Robert Rankin fans to visit venue of popular novels
A literary event to rival Dublin's Bloomsday will hit Brentford during the first weekend of August.
Friday sees the launch of Knees Up Mother Earth in Stripes bar at the football ground. Robert Rankin will be there, with music (and drinking) into the night. On Saturday the Watermans Arts Centre becomes host to a series of talks and discussions based upon the various aspects of The Brentford Trilogy - from 'The Mythology of the Brentford Area' through to 'The Science of the Brentford Books', along with a signing of Knees Up Mother Earth in the evening. Sunday sees a treasure hunt, a picnic...and another trip to a local pub.
Much more information on the Brentcon weekend and Robert Rankin are available on the excellent Sproutlore website.

On August 5th, author Robert Rankin will publish Knees Up Mother Earth, the seventh book in the popular Brentford Trilogy series. To mark this important event Sproutlore, the Robert Rankin Fan Club, have organised Brentcon1 - a series of events around the new centre of modern literature that TW8 is surely becoming. Rankin's novels have been described as a meeting of science fiction, fantasy and knockabout humour. A former resident of Brentford and Writer in Residence at the Watermans, the streets, pubs and characters of the area are a common theme in the Brentford Trilogy. The latest addition centres on a plot to sell Griffin Park to property developers and its cast of characters include a Victorian time traveller (with computer) and the Golden Fleece. Business as usual for Brentford FC, in other words. The weekend starts in the best possible way, with a Thursday pub crawl that ambitiously aims to take in 15 pubs between the Six Bells and the Exchange Tavern. A key venue will be the Bricklayers Arms on Ealing Road, a pub which takes a central role - albeit under a different name - in Rankin's Brentford novels. |
