Bike storage preferable to car parks?

Cycle to Work Guarantee Scheme

BSkyB and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) are among 70 major employers to sign up to a new government pledge to boost the number of people cycling to work.

The firms will guarantee to provide safe bike storage and changing facilities on site and easy access to repair services as part of the pledge. The employers, which include dozens of local authorities and hospitals, will also ensure that staff can offset the cost of cycling equipment through the government’s “cycle to work” tax break scheme.

Transport secretary Andrew Adonis said the government aimed to triple the amount of people currently cycling to work. GSK has already trebled the number of its employees that travel by bike by introducing better on-site facilities for cyclists.

The CBI welcomed the move. Director-general Richard Lambert said: “This initiative shows how a number of small steps by employers can encourage employees to cycle to work.

“Cycling reduces carbon emissions and can be an important part of an employer’s corporate social responsibility objectives.”
