"Ignoring" Safety Guidelines Caused Fatal Accident on BSkyB Development

A cleaner was crushed to death by a steel girder as it was unloaded by workers building the £130 million headquarters of BSkyB, a court heard on Thursday.

Hugues Makambila, 38, was pinned to the floor after the one-tonne metal beam slipped off a lorry and crashed through a safety fence at the site in Brentford.

Mr Makambila, from Milwall, east London, suffered injuries to the neck and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident at around 11am on June 5, 2008, the Old
Bailey heard.

Building firm Bovis Lend Lease is on trial accused of ignoring health and safety regulations at the site in Harlequin Avenue, which now houses the broadcaster's studios and offices.
