Brentford Voice is supporting an initiative to form a friends’ group for Carville Hall Park.
It is reaching out to the community to see if there is a sufficient number of volunteers to help support efforts to maintain and improve the area.
Carville Hall Park is separated by the M4 Flyover and the two sides of the park are quite different in character. To the south there is the remains of the fishponds along the north boundary, with garden planting and some fine trees. To the north the park is open grassland used for playing fields with a pavilion and playgrounds.
Carville Hall is on the 1777 Bassett Survey of Ealing as belonging to David Roberts (c1733-97) the wealthy distiller and brewer. The current house, which was built in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign was originally known as Clayponds. Originally, Clayponds literally had clay pits which had become lakes in its garden. It is aligned in the same position on the map as the original building and has been extended and refronted.
It was bought by Middlesex County Council in 1918 to enable the construction of the Great West Road. The railway took some of the grounds to the south and the A4 took some to the north.
It then was acquired by the Brentford Urban District Council after the First World War as a war memorial for the local men who had fought and to provide an open space for public use in an area of close built houses and industry.
Unfortunately, both north and south sides of the park have suffered from some neglect although recently some improvements have been made, but more work is needed.
Some residents have already expressed an interest in forming Friends of Carville Hall Park and Brentford Voice is assisting them in this quest.
