September 16, 2024
Hounslow Council is hosting an series this Friday (20 September) to mark the opening of the new section of Cycleway 9 in Brentford.
Among the activities planned will be a guided ride of the route along the one-kilometre-long path between Watermans Park and Alexandra Road.
The council, Hounslow Highways and Transport for London collaborated in the project to extend the cycle lane which provides protected travel on both sides of the High Street as well as two new pedestrian crossing near Alexandra Road and Pottery Road and changes to existing pedestrian crossings at Ferry Lane, Ealing Road, North Road and Holland Gardens. Side roads and junctions have been redesigned to make drivers and pedestrians more aware of the possible presence of cyclists.
The new section was officially opened last month by Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport Cllr Katherine Dunne but this extra celebration event is being held from 3pm to 5pm on Friday, 20 September at Watermans Park.
There will be activities for visitors of all ages, including games, safety briefing sessions and cycling tips.
Cycling social enterprise Bikeworks will be leading guided rides along the new route during the event, which will be run throughout the two hours of the event.
Hounslow’s E-bike hire partner Lime, will be on hand to provide information about electric bikes and give visitors the chance to try them out.
Cllr Katherine Dunne said, “In Hounslow, we are committed to making it as easy and safe as possible for people to cycle, walk and use other alternatives to the car. We are really proud of what has been achieved through Cycleway 9. The new route is already proving popular with people travelling for work, health or leisure, which is fantastic news.
“If you haven’t seen the new route yet, or even if you have, please come to our event and join in the fun.”
Transport for London recently concluded its consultation on the next instalment of Cycleway 9, which would see a further extension of the route through Brentford to Syon Park (along Brentford High Street and London Road from Alexandra Road to Beech Avenue).
