Osterley Sports Pavilion Catches Fire Overnight

The spate of fires brought on by the hot weather has continued with a blaze at a Osterley Cricket Club this Thursday (21 July). This is the latest incident in the area following a serious fire near RAF Northolt on Tuesday which required the closure of the A40.

Part of the sports pavilion was reported to be alight at 2.37am and it took over 4 hours for London Fire Brigade to get the fire under control with dry conditions making the operation more difficult. Fire crews from Southall, Heston and surrounding stations were called to the incident and some are likely to remain there for some time damping down any remaining hotspots.
Station Commander Brett Loft, who was at the scene, said, "Crews worked hard to bring this fire under control. Due to the weather conditions the fire has created a lot of smoke in all directions and nearby residents are advised keep their doors and windows shut."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
This Tuesday (19 July), the A40 was closed in both directions when a fire took hold of grassland near RAF Northolt as the area was vying with other parts of the country to have the hottest temperature on record in the UK. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters from London Fire Brigade were called to the incident and firefighting equipment from the air base was also used to help tackle the blaze. Around seven hectares was alight at the height of the fire. There have been no reports of any injuries.

The fires in west London were among a huge number that broke out during the heatwave mainly in the outskirts of the capital. LFB said that it was its busiest day since the Blitz.

A Met Police spokesperson said, "Our LFB counterparts are working incredibly hard tackling a number of fires across London in the most challenging conditions. Some of these fires are over widespread areas and will require an ongoing presence through the night.
"Officers have been deployed to these major incidents throughout the day to provide safety and security to impacted areas and to support LFB crews.
"We are providing vehicle support to transport firefighters to and from incidents to ensure fire engines can stay where they are needed most. We will continue to work closely with our partners to provide whatever further support we can."
