A new short documentary has been released, focusing on the creative community working along the River Thames in West London. Titled Creatives by the Working River, the 30-minute film captures the work, ideas, and personal stories of five local artists and makers. It was directed and produced by Brentford-based filmmaker Lucija Pigl in collaboration with David Jack Fenton.

The documentary features sculptor and enamelist Madeleine Marsh, wallpaper designer and printmaker Marthe Armitage, hatmaker and designer Max A Hatter, painter and illustrator Parul Baliyan, and letterpress and book artist Sheena Calvert of The Tiny Press. Each artist shares insights into their creative process and the role of community in shaping their work.

The film premiered at Everyman Cinema Brentford during the 2025 Creative Mile Festival and is now available to view online. It was produced as part of Artist Actuality, a small YouTube channel dedicated to telling stories about art and the people who make it. According to the filmmakers, this is the channel’s most ambitious project to date and represents a significant step in documenting artistic life in West London.

Created with support from Mark Pearce and the Brentford Creative Mile team, the documentary aims to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of the riverside creative scene. It offers viewers an opportunity to engage with the artists’ work and explore the connections between place, process, and community.

The creators hope the documentary will reach a wide audience and encourage greater appreciation of the creative talent thriving along the Thames.

Creative Mile is organised by a not-for-profit Community Interest Company with support from local businesses, the council, Inspire Hounslow and donations from the public.
