What happens when two different musical traditions craft new sounds together? For eight months Attab and Keith have explored how to compose a new music that fuses together the piano and oud, while lighting up a church with their virtuosic possibilities. The duo has created a series of soundscapes, music grown out of stories and the rich traditions that have come before them. Both instruments are two of the greatest soloistic instruments created, dusted down with huge histories behind them. The oud from the Middle East, the piano from the West…
Attab is a rising star on the London flamenco music scene and a composer. He leads two flamenco fusion bands, Candela and Alcazaba – the later band having just released their debut CD. Selected tracks can be heard on www.myspace.com/attab. Attab began his musical studies in Middle Eastern classical music, having studied at SOAS and the Arab Oud House in Cairo. In 2007 he established the Attab Haddad Quintet, which is a mix of Western Classical and Middle Eastern musicians.
Keith is a classical pianist and composer based in London. Since finishing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, he has gone on to work with a variety of different musicians from Zanzibar, Cairo, South Africa, Palestine and Bangladesh.
The concert will feature a mix of new music written by Attab and Keith, and solo pieces by Attab, J.S. and C.P.E. Bach, Somei Satoh, Debussy, Olivier Messiaen and Munir Bashir.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and are £8 per person (£6 for students). Free wine and orange juice will be served at the interval.
