Boosts for Brentford and Hounslow High Streets

£226,500 goes to Brentford from Round One of Outer London Fund out of £10 million disbursed

Brentford and Hounslow are set for a £725,000 boost to help attract shoppers back to the high street.

A drive in cinema and an edible bed are among the activities that will be put on to encourage people to the area to shop.

The investment is a result of two successful bids by the London Borough of Hounslow to the Outer London Fund, which aims to improve the appearance and economic competitiveness of town centres in the build-up to the Christmas period and throughout the New Year.

Cllr Ruth Cadbury, deputy leader of the council, said:

"This is a welcome boost for these town centres, which have been struggling in the current economic climate.

"These plans will help attract more people back to the high streets to shop, which will be a real boost to the local economy."

In Brentford, the plans include:

  • A laser sculpture installation outside Watermans art centre
  • An ‘edible bed’ of plants in the market place
  • Events in the run up to Christmas including French and German markets
  • Additional Christmas lighting
  • Improving shop frontages
  • Actively marketing the town to potential visitors

In Hounslow, the plans include:

  • Events during Diwali and Christmas with music and drive in cinema.
  • Events promoting local talent
  • New festive lighting for the High Street
  • Workshops for local businesses
  • Improvements to shop frontages
  • Removing clutter from the High Street

Work will now begin on bringing the plans to life, with the aim of having the first activities up and running in the next few weeks.
