Hounslow schools improve strong A-level position yet again

14% Rise for Brentford School for Girls

Schools in Hounslow were celebrating today after achieving their best ever set of GCSE results.

Delighted students across the borough achieved a 5% rise in grades A*-C, along with a 4% rise in grades A*-C with English and Maths.

The figure for pupils gaining five or more A* - C grades in all subjects is 13%, higher than 2010’s national average and 10% higher when English and Maths are included.

Ten Hounslow schools reported improved results for pupils obtaining five or more A* - C grades including English and Maths, with Feltham Community College and Hounslow Manor School making spectacular leaps of 13% and 14% respectively. Victoria Eadie, Headteacher, at Feltham Community College, confidently expects that the levels of progress made again this year will put the school in the top 1% nationally.

Among the large number of schools which improved results on last year in the category five A* - C, special mention should be made of Brentford School for Girls which increased its figures by 14%, Chiswick Community School with a rise of 12%, and Heston Community School up 9%.

St Mark’s Catholic School built on last year’s impressive results with 84% of pupils gaining five or more A* - C grades including English and Maths.  This is a record for Hounslow. Others maintaining excellent performance include Cranford Community College, Gunnersbury Catholic School, and Lampton School.

Across the borough over eleven hundred and fifty pupils had highly successful outcomes in vocational subjects.  Of these, 122 pupils following BTEC courses at The Green School performed exceptionally with over 52% gaining a Distinction*, which is at least the equivalent of an A* at GCSE.

Cllr Steve Curran, Hounslow’s cabinet member for education said: “This is another year of record breaking results for Hounslow’s GCSE students and we’re absolutely delighted. 88% of our students received 5 or more A* - Cs, well above the national average and a significant rise from last year’s already impressive figures.

“Our pupils can be extremely proud of the results they have achieved, with Hounslow’s teachers, school staff, governors and parents offering terrific support to help our young people onto the next stage of their life. Well done to everyone involved.”

Judith Pettersen, Director of Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning at Hounslow Council said:

“This is overall an outstanding set of results. To once again improve our GCSE results is a fantastic accomplishment and shows we are continuing to improve the standard of education in the borough.

“We have fantastic young people in the borough, and congratulations go to all the students who have worked very hard to achieve their goals, along with parents, teachers and school governors. I’m delighted everyone's hard work has paid off.”
