Love Food, Hate Waste

Pledge Online to Reduce Your Waste

Hounslow Council has teamed up with charity Wastewatch to launch a ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ programme in the borough.

Every year, 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK. This costs the average family with children £680 annually and also has serious environmental implications.

To get involved in the project, residents can pledge to reduce their household food waste and receive tips on how to save £50 a month, by visiting www.westlondonwaste.gov.uk/pledge

Everybody who makes the pledge will be entered into a prize draw to win restaurant vouchers, food hampers, cookery lessons and more.

Cllr Corinna Smart, Hounslow Council’s cabinet member for the environment said: “If we all stopped throwing away the food that could have been eaten, the CO2 benefit would be the equivalent of taking one in four cars off our roads.

“We are always working harder to make the borough as clean and green as we can, but as ever, we need your help.

“We throw away food for all sorts of reasons, but luckily some of these can be remedied. The Love Food Hate Waste team will be working throughout the borough over the next eight months giving free cookery lessons and food demonstrations and inviting you to roadshows and workshops helping you reduce your food waste with a few simple actions.

“Getting involved with the Love Food Hate Waste campaign will help the environment and save you some money in a time where that’s particularly important to most of us.”
