Paddleboarding on the Thames This Sunday


If you're not going to participate then go and watch

100 people will make up the biggest-ever group to Stand Up Paddle (SUP) on the Thames as they paddle a trail of over 9 miles from Kew Bridge to Twickenham and back.  Their aim is to raise awareness of the underused river and waterways around London and to promote this new, accessible,  fast-growing and exciting adventure sport, and to raise funds for charity.

Date: Sunday 16 September 2012

Assemble:    Kew Bridge from 12.00 pm

Start:     Depart Kew Bridge at 1.00 pm

Arrive:   Eel Pie Island, Twickenham  3.00 pm

Return:  Depart Twickenham for Kew 4.00 pm

Photo/film opportunity:  100 people of all ages, assembling on paddleboards on the river will be a spectacular and exceptional sight before they set off to paddle the trail 2-3 abreast.  Their route, passing Kew Gardens and Richmond riverside and bridge,  can be seen by spectators on the towpath or followed by bicycle or boat.

Interviewees:  Global adventurer Justin Miles; 17 year old Dorsa – the youngest female, and first Muslim coach;  and  legendary paddler Steve West -  chief coach for the Academy of Surf Instructors (Europe) will be among paddlers available for interview.

Organisers: This event is one of a series organised by Paul Hyman of Active 360 in association with Twickenham Alive and The Challenge (inspiring young people to strengthen their communities). It is also the launch event of the environmental Polar Bear Project (Justin Miles’ pioneering paddle around Greenland and the Arctic in 2013). Funds will also be raised for two charities tbc.
