An application is being made to Hounslow Council for a large telecommunications mast next to the allotments on Wellmeadow Road in Boston Manor.

Vodaphone want to build a 22.5 metre lattice tower with 12 antennas and four dishes on top and three cabinets at the base in the gravel parking area near the fence to the allotments. The mast would be more than twice the height of nearby trees.

The application process is being handled for the mobile phone company by Cornerstone. In its submission to the planning authority, it says it wrote pre-application consultation letters to the council back in February as well as contacting local MP, Ruth Cadbury and local London Assembly Member, Nick Rogers, about the mast.

Representations against the plan have already been made by residents who have discussed the matter with councillors representing the area. Objections were made on a range of grounds including the mast being unsightly, the lack of security on the site, the poor communication of the plans and the impact it would have on nature in the area. The planning authority does not consider objections relating to the health impact of the mast.

The new mast is needed to replace one at an existing site on the roof at nearby Boundary House and Cornerstone says it needs to be as close as possible to the current site to maintain coverage for the Boston Manor area. A number of other sites were considered but were found not to be suitable.

If approved work to construct the mast would begin in May of next year and would be scheduled to be completed in July.
