The final hurdle for an £80 million diagnostic centre in the grounds of the West Middlesex University Hospital (West Mid) has been passed and work is now set to start on the project.

The state-of-the-art Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre (ADC) being built by the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust received planning permission over a year ago but still needed to have its Final Business Case approved by the North West London Acute Provider Collaborative Board in Common.

Now that the green light has been given, construction work can begin this spring with a view to completion by summer 2026. The new building will stand on a site which currently has a small MRI and renal unit, as well as drop-off spaces.

The five-storey facility will provide vital diagnostic and treatment services in cancer, renal and imaging. It aims to reduce health inequalities, improve patient outcomes and provide care closer to home – freeing up space in the main hospital for inpatient care.

The centre is set to have four X-Ray machines, seven ultrasound scanners, three MRI and two CT scanners. There will also be 24 dialysis spaces, of which, 2 are isolation rooms with lobbies, plus there will be 18 Chemotherapy spaces, according to planning documents.

Cancer and renal disease account for one of the largest health impacts for the local population. The Trust says that the ADC will double capacity for these services, ensuring that the local community can access treatment locally.

The new £80 million investment is the largest capital project that the Trust has ever run, which includes a £16.5 million capital grant from NHS England. The centre will support outpatient care and will offer day services for patients, opening approximately 12 hours per day, 6 days a week.

Lesley Watts CBE, Chief Executive of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said, “I’m delighted that this new diagnostic centre at West Middlesex Hospital will bring care closer to home for hundreds of thousands of local residents. Thanks to this investment, we will speed up diagnosis and treatment helping improve outcomes for patients in our community for years to come.”

The Trust’s official charity, CW+ are seeking to raise £1.5m of donations to support with the new landmark facility. Fundraising efforts will go towards enhancing the patient experience, through improvements to furniture, green spaces and a more dynamic visual environment.
