A 41-year-old client consultant from Ealing is planning to take on her second marathon to raise money for a charity chosen for very personal reasons.

Eliza Reis who works with a jewellery and design company, has completed the Dublin Marathon and will be looking to repeat the feat in London on 27 April.

She is hoping to raise £2500 for Orbis, a charity that operates the world’s only fully accredited Flying Eye Hospital. It helps prevent avoidable blindness worldwide by bringing experienced clinicians to areas lacking the necessary medical facilities.

Orbis transforms lives through the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. For 1.1 billion people blindness or poor vision is a daily struggle - often because they simply don’t have access to the care they need. 90% of cases are avoidable and found in low- and middle-income countries. Working across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, through its unique Flying Eye Hospital, long term programmes, and dedicated training for local eye teams, Orbis doesn’t just restore sight – it gives people back their independence, their educations and their livelihoods.

Eliza says, “Orbis’s mission is very close to my heart. My partner has retinitis pigmentosa so I get to witness daily how eye conditions can be limiting to people’s daily lives.”

Fiona Lyons, Senior Fundraising Officer at Orbis said, “We are so grateful to supporters like Eliza who are committed to helping us tackle avoidable blindness by taking on challenge events like the London Marathon – which is no small feat! The funds generated through our Marathon runners hard work will help to provide much needed eye care in the countries where we work, leading to a brighter future full of possibilities.”

Eliza aims to complete the marathon in an impressive three hours and thirty minutes.
