Deadline Looms to Comment on Hanwell Planning Applications

Proposal to increase height of blocks at Azalea Close and Azalea Court

Azalea Court as it currently is

Residents are being urged to add their objections to planning applications which will increase the height of two blocks in Hanwell.

The freeholder (represented by agent J Murch) has put in a second application to add one additional storey to Azalea Court and a new application for two storeys to Azalea Close.
Residents of  those blocks as well as Nightingale Road, Shirley Gardens, Camelia Court and Gardenia Court along with others along the Uxbridge Road are expected to be affected by the development along with users of the Hanwell Cemetery ( Kensington and Chelsea) which is directly behind the proposed development.

The application reads, ''Construction of additional storey extension to accommodate 9no. self-contained residential units, of which 8 are one bed and one are two bed provision of associated cycle storage, refuse and recycling storage (Prior Approval Application, under Part 20, Class A)  | 38-70 Azalea Court Azalea Close Hanwell London W7 3QA''.

Proposals to add additional stories to blocks

Many are unhappy with the proposal and have had support from Hanwell Broadway Councillors as well as the Ealing Southall MP, Virendra Sharma, in their objections.

He commented, '' The same problems that existed with the previous application still apply. Local residents and Councillors have expressed in detail the issues with this development which I totally agree with. This application should be rejected for the cost in light and privacy alone.''

Hanwell Cemetery (with Azalea Court bordering)

One of the residents from Azalea Court is now hoping more people will add their comments to the online planning page. She told Ealing Today ''There has been absolutely no consideration to lease holders or affected neighbours or regards for the impact on users and wildlife of Hanwell Cemetery (Kensington and Chelsea cemetery) The cemetery has a number of designations to protect its open and historic character including; Metropolitan open land, community open space, site of importance for nature conservation, a conservation area and grade II listed status. A consultation report conducted in February 2022 includes Azalea Court as part of the immediate area around the cemetery that should be protected from overbearing rooflines.  Azalea Court is a mere 3.5m from the boundary.''

Objectors have listed many reasons why they oppose, including:

- Withdrawal of minimal and precious green space to accommodate bins and cycle storage.

- Impact on local wildlife, and  users of the cemetery directly behind Azalea Court.

- Noise nuisance

- Concerns over density may increase anti social behaviour

- General impact of the over development including increase parking congestion, no adequate solutions to increase need for parking with people already parking in front of -bins and pushing the issues out to local surrounding roads.

- Loss of light and privacy for neighbouring low rise houses.

- Impact on lease holders having to live in a building site.

- lack of consideration given to Amenities with GLA warning the electrical grid cannot cope with further developments in Ealing.

- concerns regarding structural integrity of the buildings with addition of more stories.

One resident said, '' It would be a living hell for us to live under circumstances where there is going to be building site. Some residents work from home, some have very young children, some have mobility issues and there is a resident with a disability which this may cause a lot of concern and issues for. We would also be really concerned over the safety of this new building as well as safety of children whilst the place is a building site.''

The deadline for comments is 15 August and full application details for Azalea Court and Azalea Close can be found on the council's planning portal.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
