An event this Saturday (18 February) in the Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre at which people were encouraged to bring along unwanted garments proved popular with scores of people attending.

The Clothes Swap Shop was held in partnership with the charity Love Not Landfill and people brought items they were no longer wearing and then given a token. This allowed them to ‘spend’ on clothes brought by other people.

The aim of the initiative is to reduce the amount of perfectly wearable textiles thrown into landfill, but it was also a great way to get a wardrobe refresh during a cost-of-living crisis.

The team from Ealing Repair Cafe was also on hand to offer advice and teach you how to mend your clothes. Ealing Repair Cafe arranges meetups around Ealing to encourage people not to throw away items that can easily be mended, repairing them for a small cost.

Ealing Broadway has been partnering with the charity Love Not Landfill since 2018 – and over 20 tonnes of clothing has been given to their local clothes banks in that time. Love Not Landfill is a non-profit campaign, run by ReLondon (previously London Waste & Recycling Board) to encourage fast fashion fans to buy second-hand, swap, recycle and give to charity. They aim to encourage 16-24-year-old Londoners never to throw an unwanted item of clothing in the bin.

This Monday (27 February) The Ealing Repair Café will be holding a Patch, Darn and Natter session at The Ealing Project, 1 High Street, Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, W5 5DB from 7.30 pm until 9 pm. A sewing machine will be available for fixing seams and suitable mends. They ask for a small donation of £3 to covers costs.
