The event which is organised by the Shri Kanaga Thurkkai Amman Temple brings in visitors from across the world, both pilgrims and interested observers. Starting at the Temple on Chapel Road it made its way along the Uxbridge Road before returning to its base.
The festival honours the victory of the war god Murugan over a demon using a divine spear. As well as pulling the chariots devotees in traditional dress rolled along the road, carried milk jugs on their heads and sported elaborate piercings. Offerings in baskets are presented to the gods. Musicians accompanied to the parade adding to the festive atmosphere. This year there was also a fundraising market in Dean Gardens.
