An Ealing doctor has won an international award celebrating the achievements of Indian students who have studied in the UK.

Dr Harmandeep Singh arrived as a 24-year-old postgraduate student at Buckingham University in 2009 and has since distinguished himself as a cardiologist in west London.

He was a leading figure at the hospital during the pandemic and is also overseeing the introduction of various ‘virtual wards’ where more patients will be treated at home via a video link with a doctor or nurse.

More than 500 people attended the India-UK Awards in London’s West End which marked the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence.

To mark the occasion, 75 former students and alumni were recognised in fields as diverse as the Arts, Law, Science & Research Education, Sport and Politics.

Dr Singh, who was was one of the winners in the Education, Science and Innovation category, said, “It was a lovely surprise as there were more than 1,000 entries. It is nice to get the recognition and hopefully inspire the next generation of Indian students to work hard and aim high.”

Fellow achievers ‘who have gone on to achieve excellence in their field, inspiring and encouraging many others to dream and achieve’ included former Indian PM Manmohan Singh and Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra.
