Town centre shoppers treated to a lively display that helps raise thousands

Youngsters and slightly older musicians entertained shoppers in the Ealing Broadway Centre over the weekend, helping raise much needed funds for Ukraine.

Decked in blue and yellow clothes the teenagers from Ealing Youth Orchestra (EYO) and others busked for the Red Cross. They played a range of music including Ukraine’s national anthem and have raised more than £1,800 pounds. Spokesperson Lydia Minko said, '' Thank you to everyone who donated and came to listen to us play and to those at Ealing Broadway who helped us organise this event — with a special thanks to Wanda Carter and Richa Grover who were so helpful in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.''

More music was supplied by the ever popular Hanwell Ukulele Group (HUG).

Established 9 years ago by Geoff Price with a handful of others at a local pub, the group has grown from the initial dozen or so and now regularly see 30 to 40 every Tuesday night at The Green W7 and always welcome new players.

A fixture at the yearly Hanwell Carnival and mainstay at the Hootie for several years, the group aim to have fun and spread joy and proved particularly popular with cheery tunes fitting the sunny weather.

Shoppers enjoyed a lively display from the group of men and women and were treated to upbeat tunes and sweets handed out to the many people who dropped financial donations in the collection buckets.

HUG member, Cathie Slack said, '' As a group we were moved by the events in Ukraine and wanted to do something to help. From past experience we knew how generous the people of Ealing are. We were absolutely delighted with the response and raised a total of £2700 from donations in the afternoon and and after.''

Red Cross teams have been working around the clock to get critical care to those who need it most. Donations from the public are allowing them to provide food, hygiene parcels, warm clothes, medical care, and support to people sheltering underground in Ukraine, and in bordering countries. But with the ongoing violence, the number of people needing humanitarian assistance is at an all-time high.

You can donate to The Red Cross online.
