Ealing Voices will place one of the great choral masterpieces at the heart of their spring concert on Saturday 11 April, when the choir performs Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem at St Barnabas Church. The work will be sung in German and accompanied by Brahms’ own intimate “four hands, one piano” arrangement — a version he created himself, which brings out the warmth and humanity of the music in a more chamber-like setting.

The Brahms Requiem is one of the most loved works in the choral repertoire — not a traditional Mass for the dead, but Brahms’ own deeply personal meditation on comfort, loss and hope. Rather than focusing on judgement or fear, it offers reassurance to the living, with music that moves between quiet reflection and powerful, uplifting choral writing.

Alongside the Requiem, the programme includes two of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, lively piano pieces inspired by folk rhythms and full of energy and colour. The concert also features Grieg’s Ave Maris Stella, a short, serene work based on an ancient hymn that shows the composer’s gift for simple, glowing harmony.

Founded in 1981 by Chris Richardson at St Matthew’s Church, the choir was originally known as Ealing Common Choir before rebranding as Ealing Voices. Now under the musical direction of Michael Veazey, the group continues to thrive as a welcoming, un-auditioned choir.

Ealing Voices typically performs three concerts per year, marking the end of each term with a carefully curated programme. While Advent and Easter concerts lean toward sacred and classical works, summer performances often include lighter fare—from musicals to contemporary choral arrangements.

St Barnabas Church on Pitshanger Lane, (W5 1QG), is a spacious and acoustically rich venue, provides an ideal setting for this seasonal celebration.
