Ealing Wind Orchestra Holds Inaugural Concert
The orchestra at its first ever public performance

January 10, 2024

The Ealing Wind Orchestra, which was formed last year, held its first concert recently at the University of West London (UWL).

Over 150 attended the event on Wednesday 3 January in the Weston Hall. Admission was free but donations collected at the event raised more than £340 for the Royal Society of Musicians.

The programme ranged from film scores to band classics and new commissions.

The orchestra was created after try-out sessions last June proved popular particularly with students at the university.

Along with the London College of Music, UWL has provided a venue for the group to meet and the use of percussion instruments for rehearsals.

The group meet on Wednesday during term time and it is always interested in welcoming local people who want to play. Musicians under 18 can join if they bring a responsible adult with them. It is particularly keen to encourage people from traditionally underrepresented groups to join and write music for the orchestra to perform.

One of the main organisers of the Ealing Wind Orchestra is Dave Gordon-Shute who is as a professional tuba player and teacher. He performs with the orchestra for Birmingham Royal Ballet and is a founder member of Onyx Brass.
