Next Thames Clean up, -  ideas wanted!

Please read message below, and email me with any advice and/or ideas you may have, as to what you’d like to do/see done!NigelApologies for my late reply. I'm glad everyone is still keen. Timberland have definitely confirmed their participation in an Earthday event on April 22nd.  They have around 260 staff who will be volunteering on the day and we are planning to use either the whole of or a large portion of this workforce to carry out a river clean up behind Brentford Ait.  As part of this event we are also hoping to offer some additional activities.  The low tide on the 22nd is around 10am so it may not be convenient for all the Timberland employees to get to the site in time.  The options we are currently exploring are graffiti cleaning, habitat raft building and Lucy Griffith at Hounslow Council is looking into various other activities locally. Now, as for a pre-April clean up by the locals, we were thinking of letting Timberland have a good crack at the site and with luck they will break the back of the litter collection.  Then the locals can carry out smaller targeted clean ups to really bring the area up to scratch.  Perhaps some of the locals might want to join in with the event on April 22nd.  Although I recognise that it may not be possible for some people to join in on a Friday. Alternatively, we can have a look at the site together again and identify a bit of the site that especially bothers the locals and tackle that specific spot.  Obviously the last thing I want is for the locals to feel that they are being excluded from involvement by us because we're buddying up to a big corporate group.  Any advice gratefully accepted. Many thanks Chris

And Saturday if enough reponse is forthcoming. But for Friday's details, see the Timberland notice below:Timberland & Thames21 Earth Day 2005 Friday April 22nd Timberland is delighted to announce we will be working with Thames21 for the 3rd year running. Thames21 are helping coordinate activities on Earth Day 2005 with up to 200 volunteers from Timberland and associated partners. In order to reach these numbers we really need your support, please read on to find out how you can get involved………………………. Thames21 have identified a site, on the River Thames near the Waterman’s Arts Centre in Brentford, West London. The foreshore of the river is badly littered here and has suffered from industrial decline. However, there has now been substantial investment in riverside development nearby and the area is being revitalised. The area has a high index of deprivation and many local people use the Waterman’s Park which is adjacent to the river. Clearing up the litter here would have substantial benefits for wildlife, enhance the enjoyment of the riverside by local people and discourage people from dumping more rubbish into the river. Morning’s Timings and Activities The day is always governed by the tides of the River Thames, as work can only take place at low water. Low tide is at 10.30 at Brentford and therefore all volunteers need to be ready on the foreshore by 09.30 to start work!! This means arriving at Waterman’s Park by 08.30 at the latest to get changed into your boots (wellies) and be briefed about the activities. A marquee, to provide cover and a place to kit-up will be set up in the park, and will act as a base for activities on the day. (See map attached) Foreshore Clean-up We estimate that the group could remove about 8 tonnes of litter from the foreshore (or beach), the islands and the riverside walkway. The area is blighted by industrial junk, litter and even sunken boats and this clean-up will make a significant improvement to the ecology and amenity of the river. We will be able to stay on the foreshore until 12.00 at the latest!! The Thames21 team we make sure we are all safely off the foreshore before the tide returns. We will then return to the park and marquee, get changed out of our boots wash hands, freshen up etc and have lunch. Lunch A packed Lunch will be provided by Timberland, and water throughout the day but if you have any special dietary requirements please bring your own supplies. As we are catering for large numbers in the outdoors we do not have the capacity to cater for special needs, we apologies for this. Afternoon’s Timings and Activities All 200 volunteers will be assigned an afternoon activity prior to the event, which will run from the end of lunch approx 2.00pm finishing by 5.00pm. Each of these activities has been chosen by Thames21 in partnership with local contacts and organisations. Every one benefits the local community and helps improve the environment for the people of Hounslow. Each activity will have a Thames21 supervisor and a partner representative to detail the work required. Activities 1 & 2 - Graffiti cleaning on the Grand Union Canal Thames21 has an ongoing programme of graffiti removal in Brentford on the canals, this involves scrubbing graffiti off the walls, using environmentally-friendly chemicals and then Thames21’s trained staff remove it with a pressure washer. This is a very enjoyable and satisfying activity. Activity 3 – Syon Park Estates Syon Park contains the Upper Thames’s last surviving tidal meadow, which is still grazed by cattle. It provides a unique insight into how the Thames looked in Roman times. Although Syon Park maintains this rural landscape, is still very much a part of London, and therefore unfortunately suffers from many problems of being located in the city, such as litter and graffiti. Several activities will take place in Syon Park, two teams will assist with graffiti removal, two will tackle litter removal on the water-meadow, one will assist with habitat management and creation. Activity 4 – St. Paul’s Recreation Ground St. Paul’s Recreation Ground, easy walking distance from Waterman’s Park, urgently needs help from volunteers to improve the park for local residents. The main activity will involve work on the railings of the grassed areas, with people removing the old paint with wire brushes and repainting it. In addition to this there may be the opportunity for graffiti removal, and some gardening, planting or weeding. Activity 5 – Carville Hall Park North Similar activities to activity 4, the majority of which will involve railing painting.
