Street hoover for those autumn leaves ..

This street ‘hoover’ was introduced with fanfare in 2008 and with its accompanying street team it quickly dealt with the leaves on pavements and in the gutters.  It was quite a sight to see in action but I can’t remember seeing it since – so how did it do?

What a useful bit of municipal kit - I wish they had a few in Ealing Council depts. Good photos.

It all looks rather cumbersome to me and it takes up a lot of space when we have so many cars parked along the road - so the road would have to be closed for it to be successful.  I would imagine that it is very noisy too.  The machines I saw in a park blowing leaves in a pile (I think that was what they were doing) were horrendously so and I thought why on earth don't they use brushes!Maybe not because these guys don't seem to be wearing ear protection?

You make good points about the cumbersome nature and noise disadvantages of these street cleaning machines Philippa.  I like the pavement and gutter cleaners in Paris France, with an operator sitting on the smallish machines - our last sojourn there, the pavements and gutters were swept and sprayed with a disinfectant in the wee small hours of a morn, leaving spotless walkways and boulevards.

Have you seen the little pavement sweeping machine?  I've only seen it once.

The noise from the machine didn't seem very significant when I saw it in action, and it shot along the road with its crew in tow so it looked the business.  Ear protection is such a wise consideration, and there is also vibrations to consider, maybe.Talking about ear protection I went to our tip today (Spaceway) as Kew was closed.  There are a lot of pavement works going on and I was sat at temporary traffic lights waiting to go onto the North Feltham trading estate (from the A4 end) and the guy alongside me digging up the pavement was using a very noisy jackhammer with no ear protection... I had my fingers in my ears for the short time I was sitting there.  :-(
