The following has been uplifted from the Chiswick Website...local societies and clubs section.."Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society Autumn 2004 ProgrammeWhether you are a long-established resident or a newcomer to Brentford or Chiswick, you have probably wondered how your street got its name, what was there before your home was built, why there's a curious bend in a local road or how an unusual building was originally used.The Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society was established in 1958 to encourage interest in the history of the area and to provide opportunities for members to find out more. You don't have to be an expert to join - just interested!Membership ensures that you receive details of the Society's programme of talks and outings and entitles you to a copy of the annual Journal. The bookstall at meetings ensures that you keep up to date with current local publications. From time to time there are opportunities to join a small research group or assist with a local history project.Our meetings, usually on the third Monday of the month, take place at Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, off Dukes Avenue opposite Chiswick Library. Most include an illustrated local history talk. Our outings - two day trips in the summer and an autumn museum outing - have taken us to a wide variety of places, wherever possible with some connection to the history of our own area. From time to time we also organise a lecture or other event open to non-members, often in Brentford rather than Chiswick.The Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society is also part of a consortium of local history and family history societies which puts on the West London Local History Conference each spring.
