Remembrance service postponed until Sunday 24th August

The service of remembrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War has now been postponed untilSunday 24th August 2014 at 11amAt The Garden of Remembrance Brentford Library due to the forecast bad weather.

I found the idea of having individual names on the small wooden crosses which we laid around the base of the memorial rather moving. Mine was A. J. Stevens. On looking for his name on the memorial itself I saw that there was another Stevens above or below and hope that they weren't from the same family although I know that this wouldn't have been a particularly uncommon event.

Do pop along to view the poppy crosses... laid out around the Brentford War Memorial. Each cross bears the name(where known) of a Brentonian... fallen.Thanks were given to the Inverness Lodge Social Club, The Lord Nelson Public House and the Kensington Rifle Club for supporting the event.

A stalwart Brentford British Legion member uttered the memorable lines...often said on these occasions:"When you go home, tell them of us.. and say... for their tomorrow, we gave our today." The National Anthem was sung and the Service closed.Well done Brentford.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.  Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun and in the morning  We will remember them ALL"There followed the laying of over 350 poppy crosses at the foot of the Memorial. Each cross carried the name of a Brentford resident who had perished in the Great War and who had never returned home to those Brentford streets....so well illustrated on that historic map several years back.The first named cross was laid by The Deputy Lord Lieutenantand then others by the families of the deceased. This picture shows Mary Macleod MP and Janet MacNamara (local historian) laying their chosen crosses.

Thankfully the postponed Memorial Service, commemorating the start of World War 1, took place this morning and was blessed with fine weather and sunshine.Some 70-80 persons attended in the presence of Maria Pedro Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Steve Curran the Mayor of Hounslow, and Mary Macleod MP.We were welcomed by Officers of the Brentford branch of the British Legion and Sarah Porter (Poppy Appeal Secretary) read a poem entitled "A thrush in the trenches".The Last Post was sounded followed bu 2 minutes silence and then Reveille.
