I posted this yesterday - frightening developments in government thinking? Also read about some outfit that wants to build a high rise block for rent to the 'middle classes' now priced out of the buyers market, the developers are lobbying for the government to let them out of the percentage of social housing units usually required, and exclude social housing tenants from its developments. The people that they want to rent to are 'professionals, over 35, with young families'. The local council, Camden, are objecting as they would like 50% threshold for social housing units, plus locals are up in arms over the look of this block. However, a former Tory housing minister, Mark Prisk M.P., is now working for the developers as well as doing the day job he was elected to do plus copping another £18,000. Handy when lobbying for a controversial development. Worrying article about housing in 'Private Eye' this week, some pillock thinks that giving away for free the last remnants of social housing in London would be a good wheeze. The normal Thatcher tripe about being a nation of homeowners. The fact that this is also rock-solid Labour territory has nothing to do with it of course. But as was pointed out, in the blink of an eye this would be sold by anyone with half a brain for a nice profit, mostly to private, extortionate landlords so that the taxpayer could fund yet more people's housing benefit. The other brainwave was to knock down all the council estates and replace them with fine Georgian Squares, to enhance the view across London. Of course this doesn't help the housing situation one jot, but hey! Happy mates and ecstatic and even richer donors to the Tories so who cares?
