Reading the Agenda for tomorrow's Chiswick Area Meeting...I noticed that Carolyn Hammond..the distinguished local historian..has retired from Chiswick Library after 40 years service...on 31st December last. She was awesome in her knowledge..and as you may be aware she has published many books about the area.I don't recall seeing any mentioned of this either in the local Press or on the Forums. We wish her a long a happy retirement.

Neil: I understand from Sally that Carolyn Hammond actually attended last nights Chiswick Area Committee meeting and was duly presented with a bouquet...I wish I had been able to go along...up urgent work put a stop to that.Ann: Greetings: thought you'd like to know that a map of The Ham in 1895 is available via Duncan's Brunel threads. One can see the position of all the settlements.Your family's home was on the west side..at No 40..next to the Canal Boat School..which is still there today!!

Keith,Yes, with Flanders Tours. I am a member of the Western Front Association (amongst others, i.e. R.M.F.A., R.D.F.A.).What heart-wrenching visits they are too, those to France and Flanders.

I would like to join in with my best wishes to Carolyn for a happy retirement. I'm sure she will be irreplacable after 40 yrs of public service. Good luck to her.Ann, Have you been on any of the WW1 tours?I've been to Flanders and the Somme and it was quite something.I've also been to Gold beach, the d-day landing site and other associated places.

I've known Carolyn for many years, she is a very experienced Local Historian and will be missed. She is being replaced and the post is being made full-time.I hope they find someone with as much passion for the topic as Carolyn had.

Jim,May I join in the good wishes to Carolyn Hammond; WW1 is my particular area of interest, and she helped me enormously with photographs and data on the old Turnham Green WW1 tank. Now she has retired, she will probably really go into overdrive with her writing; we can look forward perhaps to an even more interesting history of the Old Borough?
