Ann: I popped down to the Ham this afternoon after my visit to gunnersbury park...and we have news for you!If you were to be facing the School in the Ham..(the building is still there)..you would be facing west.On the front of the building is the current day sign  saying www. teddiesnursuries.co.uk  (have I mispelt it?)!!On the front of the building is a plaque which says that the School was revamped in 1905..about the time of your father's birth....and called Brentford National School. To the right of the building is an untidy delapidated area..with dumped cars and a caravan..and an entrance to some adjoining run down premises.  On the left side..on the school wall..is a plaque which says..."Brentford Free School erected by voluntary contributions MDCCCXV (1815?).The right side is bordered by some small delapidated yards ..some old old buidings and the giant arches of the the remains of the railway viaduct.. Hopefully it will always be saved in the forthcoming developement..some of that brickwork is 150years old and more! The arches themselves are boarded up and its likely that old cars are repaired there. It all needs to be saved ...cleaned up..and restored for the benefit of Art and crafts people.Importantly though, in this "Dump" area between the School and the Railway Viaduct...next to the canal pathway are some old small buildings..which look to me like the ones we are looking for. I could see that some doors or side windows had been bricked up many years ago.We need to do a "Nigel Moore" type clean up along there..to find out who owns the sites,,what the leases are etc etc and save every piece of old Brentford Heritage which remains.I believe that there are many other people in the area...but who do not see this Forum..who are knowledgeable about the Ham and adjoining areas  A meet up would be great..and it may be a lot of work has already been done. I've been given the name of John Bradley to contact. Wouldn't it be horrid to find out the the forthcoming delelopements for this area south of the High Street might see 150-200 year old walls and part buildings being given the Shanghai treatment.

Hi DuncanAlthough the idea of a regular service to Paddington on the old line is all but out of the question, there is a very distinct possibility of a new way opening up.  Earlier threads on the Chiswick.W4 site indicated this.  As I understand it the West Cross Route under Central London would have been extended west from Paddington along a route called Corridor 6 which included a special link to Turnham Green.  This was controversial for various reasons, including the possible closure of the District line to Richmond and was formally abandoned a month or two back.  But a new scheme, Corridor 7, has been mooted.  This uses existing track out of Paddington west to North Acton.  A short new section of linking track would then join this to the present North London Line to go down to South Acton and then on to the EXISTING but unused bit of line that runs from South Acton under the North Circular and behind B&Q at Chiswick and joins up with the present Brentford line near to Kew Bridge station.  This presently unused section would require electrification and there are two different electrification standards in different parts of this proposal. No tunnelling would be required at all and the additions and modifications would be comparatively inexpensive.  The real plus to all this is that when done, an additional 8 (?) trains an hour could be run through Brentford in each direction without affecting the existing services!I'll try to find the link to the document that Hounslow published.  It was about 35 pages of .pdf file complete with photos of most of the salient points of the proposed scheme. It struck me as the most constructive and "joined-up" piece of thinking for quite some while.Just found the link!http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/home/news/november2004/crossrail.pdfI feel that this needs wider publicity as it could be such an improvement to our local transport.I should be interested to hear everyone's views.RegardsDavid Bilesdavidbiles@aol.com
