CIL

The other day I got an email from Hounslow council about a forthcoming Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). It is all in gobbledigook although that word "Levy" has me worried. Can anyone tell me (us) what this is about - briefly and in plain English? Thanks.

Guy's response is pretty much spot on.  The only point to clarify is that Mayoral CIL is already charged on development at a Borough wide rate, e.g. in Hounslow it is charged at £35 per square metre, with all of the money collected solely going towards Crossrail.  Whereas each local authority sets its own CIL as a partial replacement for S106 financial contributions and that money goes to the relevant local authority.

It's news to me and you probably need Adam Beamish or similar to explain. From what I can see it's a part replacement for S106 money, and is a charge payable to the council when new development takes place, intended to cover or help with the cost of creating new or improved 'Community Infrastructure' which I take to mean transport links, schools etc. It seems the Mayor takes some CIL as well as the local council.
