When I first read the title of this thread I thought I'd mention the new use of "So" to start a sentence but thought it was just me being picky. Then low and behold the next post Nigel mentioned his hatred of the usage,it's not just me! It's much misused on Radio 4 esp. The Today Program and annoyingly The Life Scientific. The sequence seems to go question, question, question then an obligatory one and a half second pause to get your undivided attention, then "the Sooo" to give the impression that the expert has run through his or her enormous intellect to find the best answer that the mere mortal may understand. It's just talking down, mixed with an over developed ego really. "Cool" I spent last week with my grand children 5&6 y.o. and lost count of the "cools and well cools",I told them that I'd wind up my smacking hand if they persisted. The boy shouted to his Mum "Grandads winding up his smacking hand.....well cool!" Unbelievable that's another one,why tell me something that I can't believe? Icould but wont go on.
