£10 to get money out of a hole in the wall! It seems this is the latest con-trick of those poor, poor banks. ATM's are changing to pay to get your own money out by stealth, by charging anything from £1.50 to £10, absolutely disgraceful! In rural areas where banks have shut down people are facing ridiculously long journeys to find a "free" machine, and the impact of people trying to exist on benefits having to cough up for the privilege of the Government's wheeze of direct payments hardly needs pointing out. High time these legalised robbers were regulated, but it will be up to us customers to vote with our feet as well.

Oh well, proof positive that we can’t rely upon the private sector or market forces to take care of our many and diverse needs, without being ripped off. Banks like the Royal Bank of Scotland (owners of NatWest) and other financial institutions have to make profits and the Post Office has been mismanaged to such an extent that much needed branches are being closed down daily, cutting customers off from their money. It might make short term business sense for the likes of Royal Bank of Scotland to site these fee charging ATM’s in areas where there is little or no competition from other ATM’s but in the longer term users will no doubt resent the fee’s levied through using the ATM services of the Royal Bank of Scotland. No doubt Benny Higgins, RBS’s director of retail banking must be wringing his hands over the thought of the millions to be made from these machines, customers of these ATM’s might well want to wring his neck.
