New political party

Here's a thought.Perhaps all the other (non Tory) parties should join together under one banner; call it the Fairer Alternative party.They agree to share their ideas and resources with the sole aim of defeating the tories in 2020 or sooner, whereupon the new FA party could legislate to introduce an effective PR system, regional powers etc.They could even go the whole hog and make it illegal to be a member of the Conservative party due to its terrorist agenda.

William, the Labour party in Hounslow was in 'special measures' for a while but that had nothing whatever to do with voter registration: it had to do with membership of the party (though I was not then a member and don't know the details, except that it was very hard to join!)Of course the rushed implementation of individual voter registration led to accusations by some that this was Tory gerrymandering (lab supporters tend to be younger and more mobile; universities used to register all their students as a matter of course but cannot now). Whether the accusation has any merit I don't know, but it is an acknowledged fact that those likely to vote labour are less likely to be registered and anyway less likely to vote.

Agree wholeheartedly Vanessa. When the boundary changes are finalised, the number of MPs reduced and so on, they'll be virtually unopposable.Quite a worrying thought.

Sounds great in theory, once the Tories have finished fiddling the boundary changes in their favour and filling the (unelected) House of Lords with cronies we could be lumbered with this dire prospect forever.Isn't it amazing though it is thought that this shower will go after the unions and insist on a 40% turnout to validate a strike ballot and launch more attacks on the rights of workers. Whereas quite a few of the M.P.s given their marching orders last week will get 'elevated' to the upper chamber. What other jobs offer this sort of perk? That's without their nice little pay-offs, nothing changes.
