What I could not understand at that meeting was that no-one from Hounslow council made any attempt to 'engage' -as they say - with local people a while ago when this was first mooted. I didn't hear anyone say they didn't accept that more schools are needed, that was not the issue it was the question of where they should be sited. As in our case in Isleworth the decision was made and then just dropped on the local populace with no explanation or effort to try and explain their actions. Instead we get obfuscation, bluff and downright lies, and treated as if we were idiots. It almost seemed as if because this area is lucky in its share of green space that it is all too much of an effort to maintain it - so sod it we'll just build on it. Really there wasn't any reason given as far as I understood why the Acton Lodge site was deemed to be unsuitable, 'because it isn't' is not an acceptable or credible answer. As for rocking up with a planning application already decided apart from the committee rubber stamp - insult to injury or what? Clearly that meeting was only held because councillors were forced into it, I don't think they were remotely interested in what people had to say and seemed to regard it as some sort of affront to their authority that the peasants should dare to question them. It was a master-class in what not to do when you should be trying to take people with you and look for an acceptable way forward. It's not just Brent Lea under threat, and we all need to be on our guard if they go on getting away with this what will be next?

This lot have always enjoyed an unhealthy relationship with developers.  Unfortunately the fact that in this instance there is a school involved enables them to dress it up as socialism, and to portray residents and environmentalists as backward-looking and averse to progress.  It a sinister and frankly Machiavellian approach to engagement but one which they have perfected and their mastery of which makes them extremely smug and self-satisfied.They are literally laughing in the faces of campaigners and residents and inviting you to do your worst.  They view the statutory requirement to engage with those they are elected to serve as a challenge to be circumvented, by well-crafted BS and sleight of hand, rather than a thing to be embraced for its own benefits. The solution lies in organising residents, but our own experience here tells us that when that happens the controlling political powers will draw in resources from beyond to counter the "threat" of community power in a way that they seldom bother to do against their traditional opponents.  And so the resistance needs to grow with it rather than just remain within one neighbourhood and take on all comers against increasingly impossible odds. Unless, of course, their inability to win a general election in even the most favourable conditions creates a crisis which leads them to implode from within, and the rug to be cruelly pulled from beneath their feet in mid-smirk.  That couldn't possibly happen...could it?

The meeting was lively and acrimonious as far as Cllr. Curran was concerned, he doesn't help himself, he is by turns, dismissive of other's views, sarcastic and patronising, and got roundly and soundly booed nearly every-time he spoke.Representatives from Brentford Community Council, The Green Party and other local organisations made excellent points and raised sensible and probing questions, none of which appeared to have answers from the panels. I thought the (in)famous Sarah Ruane who we have also had to deal with over our park saga frankly made an idiot of herself. After banging on about how the council had no money and squeezed budgets, she then proceeded to say that if this school plans went ahead then the remainder of the park might get all this fabulous equipment, begged the question where was the money for this if they haven't got any? She also waxed lyrical about how this particular part of the borough was rich in green spaces so used that as some justification for snaffling some rather than the council having to maintain them. It became abundantly clear that this application for a school would turn into something permanent after this 'temporary' plan. If it really is only a two year temporary fix where exactly will the children who go there be put after the two years is up? The representative from Floreat, very full of herself, assured the understandably anxious parents of local children they had several contingency plans but these are akin to a State secret so she couldn't possibly say anything! No-one could tell the meeting why the old Acton Lodge site wasn't a suitable location for the school, 'it just isn't so there' seemed to be the response. When people are presented with a planning application that has already been recommended for approval they are bound to be very cynical and rightly so. Although assurances were given that a report of last night's meeting would be an addendum to the committee report for members I didn't see one single officer making notes or taking Minutes, so that should be interesting. Clearly this council are not to be trusted an inch where looking after our green spaces are concerned, they are an arrogant, self righteous, mealy mouthed bunch at best. None of the councillors present came out of last night with any credit at all, a little humility wouldn't go amiss, just try talking to people that's all they need to do, people can see through a stitch-up a mile off, and that's what this is.
