Unnecessary large numbers of CPZ signage

Over the last few weeks, a large number of new signs have been planted in the ground indicating CPZ and times associated with them.  Do we really have to have so many?  We not only now have lampposts with them on which is their rightful place, but our local council deemed it correct to ruin the local conservation area in Hamilton Road, Clifden Road, Brook Road South etc, by planting numerous poles with CPZ signage throughout the streets and intrusively up against our front gardens.  What is going on?  Its costing a fortune, it is unnecessary and unsightly street furniture, a walking hazard and an intrusion in front of ours homes. How can we get rid of them?

You are certainly correct on the Conservation area, its definitely a do as your told to the officers, whilst we residents have to jump through hoops to get planning for any changes to our homes.They have installed an extra 12 large poles with signage just on Hamilton Road alone.  There were already adequate signs on the lampposts which clearly stated the CPZ rules.  If a driver could not read them or find them, it is questionable that they should be behind the wheel in the first place.I have checked up on the TRGD2002 regulations governing signage and CPZ's.  Legally a CPZ must be clearly marked at the entry points as being such, along with clearly defined times etc.  which the Brentford CPZ is.  The only other requirement for extra signage is where there is a deviation from the CPZ rules, e.g. Disabled Parking.  Therefore, the Council appears to be going way beyond the rules of the TRGD2002 and installing signage every 10 to 15 meters.  A few of these are trip hazards, the others are just plainly intruding upon residents homes.  If anybody else has any further information regarding these rules I would like to hear from them.  I take great pride in the area I live therefore I shall be complaining and campaigning to get them removed.  I hope other residents will join me in doing the same.

I suggest you take a look at CPZs in other conservation areas in other boroughs to see what can and has been done. St Peters in Hammersmith )on the Chiswick Border is a good example.Some of the measures do seem to have been adopted like shorter yellow lines in smaller streets, but others like smaller less intrusive signage have not.Take a look at Mafeking Avenue where there are 4 huge signs one behind the other.The conservation officer/s have failed this area time and time again. They seem to have no input or do as they are told without question, or as I suspect no local knowledge.

Thanks for the reply.  I have contacted the Council to get more detail.  I would never have voted for the CPZ if I new for one moment they would destroy it with unsightly street furniture.

You may find that this signage is part of the traffic order for a CPZ and that it is required by the legislation and that the council has to abide by that. Quite often the legislation covering this sort of thing is quite specific, might be worth checking out?
