My worst nightmare

Knock on the door about an hour ago a neighbour in an adjoining road asks 'have you got a pet snake', if there's one thing I cannot abide it is reptiles and especially snakes. Apparently someone who backs on to our rear garden saw a black and yellow one and now doesn't know where it went! Unbelievable - someone was trying to contact the RSPCA but I said I thought I'd give that a miss and just 'phone the police. Trust me if I see the bloody thing you will all know about it! Why not have a budgie instead? People can be really stupid at times.

What is it with you people? - The police are a public service unless I of course missed something, they generally can get in touch with other organisations that ignore the general public, I do not consider that a waste of time, and you should read things more carefully, I haven't contacted anyone - it was a conversation I had with someone else about the best thing to do.

I would call the police because I know from past experience that 'phoning the RSPCA is a nightmare, they are more likely to take notice of the police. I also believe the local police might have the contact details of a reptile expert. That's common sense.

So you would call the police and waste my money because that would be your first instinct - without even exercising common sense? I've no sympathy for you, and if you perceived I demonstrated "patronising superiority" it sounds like your issues go beyond ophidiophobia.

I will put my hands up to being incredibly stupid when it comes to this - I HATE the bloody things, you can believe what you like, if it's me or it then it gets it as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people around here have pets including me, and even if it is an Adder a bite from it wouldn't do a cat or dog any good and could even kill it. I really don't need patronising superiority thanks.

It could be an Adder. They are a native species, and they could well be out and about in certain gardens at this time of year. They are venomous but not aggressive, so just leave them alone. I can't believe you would call the police - just brush up on the flora and fauna of Britain - you'll educate yourself and also save the taxpayer and the police time and money. "People can be really stupid at times".
