Are we wasting our time....trying to get to pig to sing?

I like those lines that have a meaning ...and better describe what one is trying to say.Such as:1) "It's like playing table tennis against a blanket". Should you just give up?2) "We're trying to get the pig to sing. All he does is grunt grunt grunt. The pig won't co-operate. We're wasting a lot of time,money and energy....AND worst of all....the pig gets annoyed"!Do you know of other clever apt or amusing lines..that enable one to overcome the obstacles of life.
