We went to see a basement conversion under the house and garden in South Ealing.Very opulent. Must have cost an absolute fortune. Very nice but somehow it's almost swedish contemporary design sat uncomfortably with the rather modest elegant edwardian style of the rest of the house and street. It seems it's thrown up a few headaches for neighbouring properties though, which is always a problem with huge earthworks and old houses. With many boroughs banning such conversions, it may be a rarity. These open days are a great insight and does show what can be done with a bit of creative ingenuity, and how it sometimes works and sometimes almost works and sometimes doesn't work at all.So if all of Lateward Road was excavated under the houses and back yards then we could all park our cars off street, keep bicycles, have a hot tub and laundry room, a dungeon to keep the feral kids in and somewhere to put the wheely bin! Wonderful!
