Any suggestions?

My youngest son finally passed his driving test today at the first attempt, great he thought - er - no. How in heaven's name do you get insured? We have - between us - tried every which way, with God alone knows how many companies, brokers and online all to no avail, unless you want to pay thousands out. My insurance company wouldn't take him as a named driver until he has held a licence for six months, the fact is he could not bother driving for all that time but then they'd be prepared to accept him - bonkers. Some companies refuse to insure a car over a certain age and others because he's newly qualified - what do you have to do?

Logically you could argue that if you have just passed your test the rules and regs would be fresher in your mind than with someone who has driven for years. But insurance companies are a bit like taxmen...there's no way round the way they think imo.

Black box fitting is not an option as they say my son is too old for that! What a bunch of scamming b*stards the insurance industry are. There should be an affordable and basic government scheme that you could pay with the car tax for the three years after getting your licence, giving you a chance to build up some experience. We have a driving test which even when people pass it is not acceptable to insurers - mad or what?

I have heard that having one of those tracking devices fitted to the car might increase the chance of being able to get insurance. I always think that insurance companies want it all one way and to do as little work as possible. Talk about a cartel. Good luck Vanessa.
