Dave  Allen R.I.P.

Just heard on the 6 o'clock news that Dave Allen the Irish comedian has died. We shall miss his wonderful sense of the ridiculous and most of all in this age of the politically correct his merciless mickey taking about all religions. Whatever God he followed I hope he too finds him.

Wonderful piece in today's Sunday Mirror from one of the journalists who knew Dave Allen for years, he ends the piece by saying "may his God go with him,if God dares", I thought that was brilliant.

Like many others, my memories of Dave Allen come from watching him in Tonight With Dave Allen and Dave Allen at Large. I loved his irreverent attitude to religion and sense of the absurd. He was a phenomenal storyteller and the best sit down stand-up comedian of his generation; he was a groundbreaker and the Godfather of alternative comedy. Some of my favourite Dave Allen quotes are: "I don't go out of my way to be outrageous, I just go out of my way to look at things." "I'm an atheist ... thank God.""Don't mourn for me now, don't mourn for me never - I'm going to do nothing for ever and ever” Dave Allen claimed that he would like to have this inscribed on his headstone. Rest in peace David Tynan O'Mahoney, we'll miss you.

Vanessa and Samantha,May I join in your tribute to the late great Dave Allen.An Irish comedian taking the mickey out of the Roman Catholic Church was really something back when he started his routines...!I too hope his own God was waiting for him with open arms, and an endless supply of cigarettes and whiskey.

Yes, I was really sorry to hear about him passing away.  I remember him on television as a child and thought that he was hystically funny.  Like the 1970's Parkinson programmes, his shows were very atmospheric - one could sense a club-like atmosphere and almost smell the whisky and cigarettes!  I have never been particularly amused by the Alternative Comic Brigade that followed from the 1980's onwards.  Unfortunately, another old-timer goes, with little to replace him.
