Where would you like to be drinking your Guinness today?

This was the question in a "famous" Guinness consumers competitionback in the 1960's.Participants had to match photos of unusual places with a list of captions...and then for the tie breaker had to answer the above question in a most apt and original way.The names of places all over the world were submitted and then there were to funny places..in heaven etc etc.Over to you... maybe David Giles (Chiswickw4.com) could pick the winner!

Hello Ann    I will not disallusion you and tell you that Toledo is not a romantic place, but I will tell you that the locals have really made an effort to spruce the place up, and emphasize the positive in the last few years.    Georgia Pacific, the big logging company closed up a few years ago, left the town, so they had to think of something to draw people to their town. They have spruced up Main Street, brought the local Hotel back into operation, opened up a couple of good restaurants.    They have quite a thriving group of artists who live and work there, Michael Gibbons is quite a well known artist who lives in Toledo. We also have an artist who hails from Ireland named Ivan Kelly who is beginning to make a name for himself.    You might be interested in this site: events@cityoftoledo.org

Hello again Doris,Nice to hear how you spent St. Patrick's Day.I love the sound of that name, "Toledo";  reminds me of great Westerns of long ago - film and book - and Country & Western songs.Probably isn't at all that 'romantic' in reality - but please don't spoil it by saying so.Keep in touch:  we ex-patriates must have something to add to the West Londonon forums.

We celebrated St. Patrick's day yesterday by driving inland from our Oregon coastal home to a small town called Toledo on the banks of the Yaquina River. Where we had a cup of Irish Tea with scones and Soda Bread.  The only alchohol served was the Irish whiskey marmalade!  This event took place at the newly built Toledo Centennial History Centre (formerly Sid & Teeny's Grocery).  Toledo is celebrating the centennial of its incorporation in 2005, it has planned a year long list of special events.    Toledo was once a logging town and was settled by a great number of Irish emigrants.

Gerry,Where would we be without you?It's kind of dull here today, but we are hoping the rain will hold off until after the Dungarvan parade which is due to start at 3 p.m. (but this being Ireland, it will probably be nearer 3.30 p.m.).I am staying at home for myself...the Waterford clan will be attending the parade in the city, and my Dungarvan branch is already in Abbeyside waiting for the 'kick-off'.Most of them will turn up here sometime this evening - exhausted, dying for a cuppa, and trying to quieten little ones who  will also be totally knackered.  I've had quite a lot of e-cards from friends and relatives worldwide, who will all be kicking their heels up at some watering hole or other, so the house is full of Paddy's Day spirit...even if the owner is being lazy.

Jim,I love most things Irish but not Guinness - I would have to be unconscious, with a drip attached. Google have a spectacularly decorated title today - fair play to them for making the effort!  I wonder if they were asked would they similarly honour St. George?By the way, there's a website asking for votes to make 23rd April a National Holiday in England - hope all our chums have signed on the doted line!  To save you asking... of course I have said, "Yes."
