Wheelie bins

Done to death probably, I know, but did we all get our wheelie bin letters yesterday from our lords and masters? In our case we will now have seven wheelie bins replacing the unobtrusive container which we used for the black bags from 7 converted flats. Time for bin men to clear: about 10 - 15 seconds. Time to tip 7 wheelies? At least a minute I'll warrant. Not to mention seven residents having to move the bins into position once a week, something previously not needed. They say they consulted widely. Widely doesn't include around here, clearly. Idiots.

It is very hard for people to envisage what it will look like until it happens and they certainly would not expect anything that is incapable of working being foisted on them.Most people already have enough to worry about without feeling that they have to do this as well.

I suspect that those who object to the Wheelies have Paul Slattery to thank for this re-think, after his spirited campaign bringing this issue to the Leader of the council personally?

Great news reported on CW4. No wheelies will be coming for mixed recycling and recycling will remain the same with small containers which can be easily accommodated and carried through the house for kerbside sorting.

We need a pictorial record of the destruction of the streetscene.The Council may not be interested but how many of the houses belong to the Council?We shouldn't let them brainwash us.  We'll end up as bad as those people who think that the only carrier bags they can take to Sainsbury's is a Sainsbury's one.

I really can't see how a Council can require people to remove a wall (for example). Hounslow Council haven't said this as far as I am aware but what legal right would any Council have to require one to knock down a wall which is an original (or even newer) part of one's house? - mine for example having been there for nigh on 120 years.

I've sent photos to both Hounslow and Ealing of wheelie bins crammed into small front gardens and it's made no difference at all.Improving the recycling percentage is the priority but whether it's going to do that is questionable.They say we will even have to remove trees, shrubs, walls and plants to make space for them and concrete over.

Mike  Please take photographs to record what you have now which works for you so that you can compare the scene once the wheelie bins arrive.  Pictorial evidence of the destruction of the streetscene and gardens will remind us of how much better it can be.

Exactly.  Ealing residents have been told that they can share wheelie bins which especially where you have already made an effort to make your environment look nice is far more acceptable. I agree wheelie bins in the wrong place make the area look like a slum.  It's all about power and shows no common sense.

Oh, and apart from all that, wheelie bins make any area look like a slum. The number of photos around London I've had ruined by the ubiquitous wheelie bin.

Now you're really into hope over experience territory! Leave the office - not a snowball's chance in hell. Several people have commented about how - in spite of the wheelies - the collectors still struggle and heave to extract your plastic bag from the wheelie only to struggle to the lorry to heave it in. Having coffee with a friend the other day she related that she had had the exact same conversation with representatives of the contractors, who stood her hard and fast that it simply never happens. They would never do such a thing???Well, both she and I, and I'm sure loads of others witness the same thing week in, week out, and none of us appreciate being patronised by prats who clearly believe if they say something is, then it will be! In the spirit of the season - Oh no it won't!

It's not just about consulting (which I don't believe they did - and which they also say they don't need to do) is it?  It is about leaving the office and walking around the area physically (not virtually) and making sensible decisions.
