"Theo Dennison (and Steve Curran) have gone out on a limb to move the engagement agenda forward and although it is easy to be cynical about motives and delivery I think we should all take a good look at what is on the table."Where? When? What? Phil is right, the Pit Park, Church St., Brent Lea, Osterley etc. etc. If we're cynical then they have only themselves to blame. Who in their right mind would have sat like dummies at an area meeting where such contentious issues are being aired - limited questions from the public in the public forum, and had the sheer effrontery to call this masquerade the democratic process? You clearly know more than us - so what limbs have dumb and dumber gone out on? I saw the Dear Leader at the very well attended meeting in October re Church St. He skulked at the back of the hall and took no part. When finally confronted by an irate resident his response was "we've already made a decision" - you clearly have a different expectation of 'moving things forward' than the rest of us. You forget there is a record of fudge and damned lies here in Isleworth - yet nothing has been done by the Dear Leader except to allow the liar to retain a cabinet role. Cynical? Moi? You bet. I just hope none of you ever knock on my door come the next elections, Labour for being a pathetic disgrace and the Tories for making excuses for them. I may have missed something but I thought you were the opposition, so obviously we wouldn't fare any better if you were in power locally. Or as someone far more eloquent than I once said: "Don't p*ss on my shoes, and tell me it's raining."

Eliza and Phil - I feel your pain I really do.I was there last night and was not impressed by how residents were treated. If you were come to a CAF meeting you will see that I chair meetings in a rather different way. Two Labour Councillors asked me afterwards if I had come to see how an Area Forum should be run. Out of politeness I said "yes" but did not add "but unfortunately that is not what I have just seen".That being said running a feisty Area Forum is not for the fainted hearted and I have had to learn on the job i.e. I have made plenty of mistakes. I learnt a lot in November for example when Councillor McGregor (my deputy) chaired a single issue meeting about extending our Riverside CPZs. Another example of where a Ward Forum could have been useful.  Residents elect us, residents pay us and residents put their trust in us - we must always represent the interests of our constituents and not as Labour frequently say in the Chamber "we will represent the interests of those who elected us [subtext Labour voters and not anyone else]".At my selection panel I was asked how I would vote if a particular decision was Party policy but not in the interests of my constituents. I had no hesitation in saying that I would vote for what was in the best interests of my constituents and then seek to change Party policy. Many months later I was quietly told that I had either been very brave or very stupid - but that I had given the right answer.  All I am suggesting to you is that you look at some of what is on offer. Theo Dennison (and Steve Curran) have gone out on a limb to move the engagement agenda forward and although it is easy to be cynical about motives and delivery I think we should all take a good look at what is on the table.

Well clearly I'm not as clever as you Sam, and not as familiar with the way that Labour operates in my part of the world, so in my stupidity I just carry on assuming - in the absence of any evidence to the contrary and all things remaining the same - that they will still be doing things next week in the same way that they do them this week and that they did them last week.I note you have confidence that Councillor Curran is committed to improving citizen engagement.  This in spite of Church Street, the Pit Park saga, the harassment of residents trying to raise money from rugby parking, Brent Lea rec, the abolition of the borough's tenants' federation, the shameful abuse of a special relationship with local police to try to bully a 65-year-old resident activist - have I missed anything?  These are the things my lack of confidence in him is based upon.  What is the basis of the faith that you have in him?Residents in Isleworth have a proud history of self-organisation.  We held Council seats for 12 years, we removed them from office for four.  Yes, you can say with justification that they learned nothing from the experience and you can rightly point out that the machine finally managed to overwhelm the residents (with a little help from their friends, eh Sam?), but a calling card has been left and for as long as they carry on treating local people in the way that they do they will always be looking over their shoulders.Ideas ultimately can only be beaten by better ideas, they cannot be suppressed indefinitely by brute force and bullshit.Of course your situation is different from ours, because unlike us you have at least the crumbs from the table in the form of your little protectorate in W4, which you are happy with in exchange for your deference.  Fair play to you for that, I make no criticism of you for the path you have chosen to walk.  But we in Isleworth are made of sterner stuff.

"Perhaps response (or lack of) to citizen participation should also be reviewed?"The papers attached to the following links came to the Chiswick Area Forum (CAF) in November but do not appear to have been presented at IBAF - my apologies if I have got this wrong.http://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/documents/s119009/Citizen%20Participation%20Report.pdf http://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/documents/s119010/Citizen%20Participation%20Report%20Appendix%201.pdf http://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/documents/s119011/Citizen%20Participation%20Report%20Appendix%202.pdf http://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/documents/s119012/Citizen%20Participation%20Report%20Appendix%203.pdf The ability to set up Ward Forums is one that residents and residents' groups should in my opinion be discussing NOW. This really would bring decision making and consultation much closer to the communities affected. The Church Street issue could well have been dealt with very effectively by a Ward Forum. I take Cllr Dennison's commitment to increased citizen participation/engagement at face value and so far as I can see he has always been fully supported in this by Cllr Steve Curran. No doubt I will now be accused of "sucking up" to the establishment or being naïve. To those people I would say "get a life" and "stop chewing on those sour grapes". Let us grasp the opportunities that are presenting themselves to us and try and make something of them.   I am happy to continue this discussion on this thread or I more than happy to talk to anyone on the phone or face to face or via email.
