War & Peace - hooked!

Having watched last night's episode of this brilliant programme I can only say I am delighted that that up himself Prince Andrei has been (hopefully) fatally wounded. He even made peace with that arch villain Anatole who had taken down his fiancee Natasha! Refusing to forgive her - this from a man who was so nasty to his poor wife - and had no guts to tell his bonkers father to get knotted. As for Natasha - wake up you stupid, vacant girl - the lovely and kind Pierre is the one you should go for, once he's dropped that vile schemer he got bamboozled into marrying.

For rattling good entertainment it was brilliant - it may not be a faithful to the book version how many are? Many millions of viewers can't be wrong. And this was made by the BBC with a British director, I hope now to get to grips with the book.

This would be the worst rendition of War & Peace that I have ever watched. I was so looking forward to it but after 1.5 episodes it made me ill. If Tolstoy saw this Hollywood hyped up version of his wonderful and extraordinary account of a period in Russian history he would turn in his grave. The BBC have sunk to depths here. The BBC 1972 version with Antony Hopkins as Pierre Buzukhov was enthralling, wonderful and true to Tolstoy. Also the radio version last year sometime was brilliant as well. I am only sorry that people who perhaps have never read the books will think that this latest version is what War and Peace is.  It isn't.

Andrei is an idiot: he marries one silly, pretty child who soon gets on his nerves. He's lucky enough for her to die in childbirth. So what does he do then? Go out and get engaged to another silly, pretty child!
