Council leader has kept social home 9 years after he bought another property
Ruth Cadbury MP led a debate on the unaffordability of housing in Westminster, calling on the government to do something about it. She said government statistics show that 32,000 people applied to London councils for homes because of homelessness in 2014/5 alone. Homelessness has gone up 38% in the last 5 years and even those fortunate to be earning £100k p.a cant afford to live here. But the leader of Ealing Council, Cllr Julian Bell, has kept a 4 bed social house on a taxpayer subsidised rent for 9 YEARS after buying a 5 bed private house in the next street in Acton. Housing Association A2Dominion are aware Cllr Bell owns a property and Bell admits to renting rooms out for profit because he has so many spare ones, but they have not taken the house back off him. I can't imagine anyone else would get away with this. It is wrong. Public subsidised housing should be going to those with no home, not those wth two homes. No one was registered on the electoral register in Cllr Bell's social home last year yet he still hasn't handed it back so a family in genuine need to benefit.
