A Corbyn vision of local government - public meeting

Momentum Hounslow is holding a public meeting on 'A Corbyn vision of local government' on 24 July (3-5pm) at St Paul's Church, Brentford.Momentum - Hounslow follows the principles of straightforward, honest politics put forward by Jeremy Corbyn. We aim to engage more people in local decision-making and are holding the meeting aims to discuss alternative approaches to running our council.We will be holding discussions on: -How we can campaign effectively against government cuts-Ensuring our community is listened to with effective engagement and proper public consultations-Alternatives to academy and faith schools, including Co-operative schools-Addressing the housing crisis and pushing for more genuinely affordable housing-Supporting NHS campaigns in west London, across boroughs-Supporting opposition to the third runway at HeathrowGuest speakers include Sam Tarry, Labour councillor in Barking and Dagenham, and Emine Ibrahim, Labour councillor in Haringey.This meeting is a ticketed event so please register online as the room has limited space (seats 100 people) and we will not be admitting people on the door.Tickets available from:https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-corbyn-vision-of-local-government-tickets-26146204000

We are not trying to deselect anyone. One or two people have said that in frustration at the decision not to support Jeremy Corbyn.

I really don't know what the NEC were thinking letting Corbyn off the hook - so we have a candidate that can't get any nominations, how ridiculous. If these people aren't completely mad I really don't know who is, not one of them gives a rat's a*se about their party, let alone the country and those of us who hate Tories but would never support Corbyn and his destructive attitude. He has spent his entire life sniping from the back benches and doing bog all useful to advance the cause and standing of the Labour Party in the wider electorate. I just hope all these people who think this is some kind of a jolly jape are prepared to get off their rears and do some hard work in elections. Experience is that they are big on gobbing off at meetings but at the back of the queue when there's real work to be done. Meanwhile the rest of us are in despair.

Crispin, is it your groups intention to deselect Ruth Cadbury in the near future using these new votes?I noticed Seema Malhotra on the news yesterday fawning over Angela Eagle when she announced her leadership contest and so expect that Ruth would have been there also

You have no idea which way all those people would vote - what happens to those people who hate the Tories but cannot subscribe to the far left bleatings of Corbyn? It is the stuff of imagination if you seriously think he could command a majority in the country, a lot of us would seriously consider supporting Labour if he were to stay as Leader I'm afraid, and that's the reality.

There are now over 1,500 members of the Labour Party in Brentford & Isleworth alone. This is mostly down to Jeremy Corbyn and the majority of them are not content with the status quo (that's why they joined).

That may well be the case, but I'm afraid I do not subscribe to Jeremy Corbyn's way of doing things, and I have no faith that he would if he could, do anything about the current disgraceful situation in Hounslow. What are the members doing about it? All I hear is that no-one wants to rock the boat and let's all be positive and stick our heads in the sand and pretend everything is wonderful. It isn't.

Hi VanessaThe point of this public meeting is not about personalities, but about ways that we can improve the way the council is run. Jeremy Corbyn is promoting straightforward, honest politics and this principle would work well at a local level. Many people feel disenfranchised and this needs to be addressed. We also need more transparency about decision making and the finances of the council.

One alternative view would be that this is a meeting organised by Labour Party members in Hounslow who appear to be committed to a local authority which takes a positive approach towards engaging residents.In the light of recent events, not least the disgraceful bullying of Brentford resident Paul Slattery, the significance of this development should not be understated.

I think some of the ideas are laudable, unfortunately they are destined never to see the light of day unless you can win an election and form the government. I'm very much afraid from my point of view that isn't going to happen while Jeremy Corbyn is in charge. For all that Boris is a prat, a buffoon and a liar, what he had that appealed to a lot of people not very engaged with politics was personality and a way of connecting. Sorry but Corbyn's holier than thou way of speaking and being supported by that patronising, rent a gob, Abbot just ain't gonna do it.

We aim to engage more people in local decision-making.If what I read is correct Momentum follows the strategy of only wanting to listen to people who agree with them. Don't think this is an honest approach to politics.

I am now convinced that these sort of meetings are only being held so that somebody can say they are having these sort of meetings.  There is absolutely no intention of actually getting anything done.... Can't you spend the money on reopening the toy library in Brentford, they will tell you how to engage people.
