Domestic Recycling

Over two weeks and our separated food waste has not been collected (anyone else?), particularly bad considering the hot weather and therefore creating a public health issue. Since the borough's popular and exciting new wheelie bin and recycling unnovations, we've been model participants. But what is the point if they don't perform their side of what has to be a mutual obligation?

I found that if I take the top shelf out of the dishwasher I can fit the outside food bin in, for a quick wash ... having rescued the insect life, first.  :) x

It is a real pain.  You must report it as otherwise they consider that everything is hunky-dory.  Missing one week is irritating and can be OK but they might then miss the following week as well.In this weather it is worth making sure that you keep your food waste bin in the shade if you possibly can and also use compostable bags (seedling logo).Also washing out the bin in between collections and spraying it with something smelly eg dettol or bleach to remove any smell of rotting anything that will atract flies as it permeates the plastic.  (So much easier to wash out a food waste bin than a wheelie.)  Keep watching what you are throwing away to see if you can make even less waste.  Bread is one of the worst things and keeping a sliced loaf in the freezer and just taking out what you need slice by slice works for many people.

It has happened several times this year that our food waste has not been collected, sometimes twice in a row  but the last month or so has been ok.  Very frustrating and smelly. We use the biodegradable bags and I did wonder if an uneducated collector thought it was real plastic and declined to collect on that basis.
