Hugh's War on Waste Tonight BBC1 9pm  (Thurs 28 July)

Pushing back the amount of waste generated including packaging...The less you buy wrapped around your purchases the less you have to repurpose or dispose of.Have a look at who Hugh is challenging tonight.  Maybe it is someone you could challenge tomorrow.  We all need to speak up.

The last time I bought some books from Amazon was years ago and I was impressed by the minimalist wrap-around cardboard.Do they no longer use this packaging?  Or is it not very often?I bought some this week and was horrified to receive an absolutely huge box in comparison - just like the type that was being criticised on the programme:400mm x 300mm x 110mm box with a squiggle of brown paper rollholding 7 children's picture books measuring280mm x 250mm x 30mmI'm sure that they must be able to package this better. There is much too much!  There are some regulations regarding this and it wouldn't surprise me if this was breaching them - and it is a reminder of the days when huge brown boxes of stationery were delivered by a certain company and inside rattling around in the bottom was just a couple of small boxes of paper clips and staples. Are we going backwards?
